Take Action To End Famine

Poverty, social justice, welfare... these are some of the things that tug at my heart strings. There are loads of organisations out there putting pressure on our world leaders to end famine and raise the standards of living for every individual in every nation. And its so easy to get involved, a lot of the time all that is required of us is our voice.

Please check out ONE's 'Hungry No More' campaign. Take a few minutes to watch ONE’s new video "The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity" and sign the petition to world leaders.

The reasons for the famine in the Horn of Africa are complex and solutions are difficult, especially in Somalia, but we can’t lose sight of some simple facts:
  1. 30,000 children have died in just 3 months. Thirty thousand. With over 12 million people at risk.
  2. Famine is not a natural catastrophe – drought doesn’t have to lead to famine. It can be prevented, as we've seen in much of Kenya and Ethiopia.
In the 21st century, it’s an obscenity that people are dying because they can’t get enough food to eat. Every one of those 30,000 children is part of a family – a son, a daughter, sister or brother. We can’t imagine what it must be like to starve to death, but most of us know what it’s like to lose someone we love.

Please watch the film and make use of the voice you have -- sign the petition.

It will make a difference in putting pressure on world leaders to do more to help those in need right now, and live up to promises already made to invest in the things proven to work – early warning systems...irrigation...drought resistant seeds… and of course, peace and security.

Thanks!

ABC's Giggle and Hoot

If your an Aussie mum of a toddler then you have likely heard of ABC's Giggle and Hoot.  My little girl absolutely adores Hoot.  She often stops what she is doing and goes over to stand as close as she can to the TV when Hoot comes on.  She points to him, grins, giggles and waves hello.  On some occasions she even cries when the show ends.  Well now I can combine her love for Hoot and her fascination of chewing on crocheted/knitted toys because I have discovered a crochet pattern to make Hoot!  Thank you to Six Little Mice for providing the pattern.  My little munchkin is going to be delighted.

Petal Pullover

I can't believe its been four months since my last post! My excuses for neglecting you... study, work, my daughters first birthday, landscaping the backyard, reading (reviews to come) and this gorgeous top:

I came across this Petal Pullover by Robyn Chachula in the Spring 2011 edition of Interweave CrochetI completed this project using Moda Vera Sombre (100% Organic Cotton), a soft and comfy lightweight yarn that is perfect for spring weather.

The pattern was quite complex but also repetitive so once I got going I could put the magazine aside. The sleeves were a little trickier and I was a stumped when it came to joining them onto the body. I would have liked to have seen a diagram illustrating how and where the edges joined together. Nevertheless it all come together in the end.

This is now one of my favourite tops. It looks just like the picture in the pattern (gotta love that!) and its quite versatile: I can dress it up or down for work, play or just lounging around the house!
